The storyline is clear, and the visuals are sharp, but the rushed plot, shortened runtime, gimmicky 3D effects, and horrible handling of Scott Speedman's Michael keep it from reaching the greatness of Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. Selene's single-minded determinedness gives the character some flair, and it's a welcome sight to have her back as the series' focus (as well as the introduction of Theo James' vampire David).

The rest of Underworld: Awakening revolves around Selene's pursuit to locate and keep her daughter safe from the humans who want her blood. There's more than enough intrigue among the vampires and lycans without focusing on stock human characters.Īfter being captured and cryogenically frozen by humans, Selene is awakened to find that she has given birth to Michael's daughter, Eve ( India Eisley). It's in interesting concept, but the film seems to have forgotten the most exciting parts of the franchise. This time around, humans have been made aware of both vampires and lycans, forcing both species to hide underground as they continue to wage their never-ending war with each other. It's refreshing to see her at the center of the action once again and Beckinsale doesn't seem to have missed a beat in slipping back into the role. Selene makes her triumphant return to the franchise after being absent from Rise of the Lycans.
